September 30th - National Day For Truth and Reconciliation

Indigenous peoples have a deep and enduring presence in southeast Alberta, with histories stretching back thousands of years. The region’s rich archaeological sites and cultural landmarks testify to the longstanding connection between Indigenous communities and the land.

Before the arrival of Europeans, our region was inhabited by various Indigenous groups including the Siksika (Blackfoot); Kainai (Blood); Piikani (Peigan); Stoney-Nakoda, Tsuut’ina (Sarcee); as well as the Cree, Sioux and the Saulteaux bands of the Ojibwa peoples and we acknowledge the traditional and unceded territories of our indigenous people and the Metis Nation.

The Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce honours and acknowledges the many traditional and unceded territories covering our native lands throughout Canada, that Inuit, Metis and first nations people call home and we are grateful for the land that has been care for and shared with us by the many people who came before us.

The traditional territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy extended from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains to the plains of present-day Alberta and Montana. In 1877, the Blackfoot Confederacy signed Treaty No. 7 with the Canadian Crown, a significant event in the region’s history. Archaeological evidence from sites like the Saamis Archaeological Site along Seven Persons Creek reveals that these communities engaged in bison hunting and utilized the land for living spaces, dating back to around AD 1500. Today, Medicine Hat continues to honour its Indigenous heritage through initiatives organized by the Miywasin Friendship Centre’s and Brenda Mercer, with White Horse Rider.

The Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation through ReconciliACTION. We recognize that as an employer, you can only encourage participation in commemorative activities on a statutory holiday, but you cannot dictate how the employee spends that day, as an employer cannot require employees to engage in specific activities on their personal time and any mandatory programming must occur during work hours if employees are expected to participate.

As such, the Chamber has chosen not to close as a Statutory holiday, but instead, our team chooses to invest the time into opening up mindful spaces for dialogue, discussion, unlearning and learning on this day. We choose to carry out our activities with intention. We also recognize that as we learn, we will make mistakes. We commit to owning those mistakes, and we commit to taking responsibility for them in ways that support. We are committed to action and justice, and as a shared endeavour, we aim to create a healthier, equitable and just future.

Our Chamber’s culture statement reflects our unique and thriving culture that embodies our core values and beliefs. We are open, approachable, and committed to listening to every member of our team, fostering an environment where diverse perspectives are not only welcomed but celebrated. We don't tolerate disrespect or mistreatment, and we firmly believe in standing up for what's right. We remain open to new ideas, thrive on discussion and an openness to change, and are flexible, adaptable, and agile in our approach. We actively seek innovation and refuse to be stuck in our ways, always encouraging the exploration of new ideas. We actively seek out member input because we understand the value of diverse voices and are genuinely interested in supporting our members. We prioritize building strong relationships and remain solution-focused, continuously striving to make a difference and have a meaningful impact. Caring about each other and our community is at the heart of our culture, and we are united by our shared desire to learn and grow.  We value resiliency through tough times, supporting one another through our challenges. As we move forward, our goal is to become more courageous in our pursuit of excellence, shedding fear of reactions and responses in our relentless pursuit of growth and improvement.

The Indigenous history of Medicine Hat and southeastern Alberta is a tapestry of resilience, culture, and connection to the land. Engaging with these histories fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of the region’s rich Indigenous heritage and we are grateful for elders and knowledge keepers who help us to gain a deeper understanding of our heritage and history of our lands that we celebrate as we live, work and play in southeast Alberta.

More Mandate Letters from the Province

Alberta’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis, Minister of Justice Mickey Amery, Minister of Children and Family Services Searle Turton and the Ministry of Intergovernmental and International Relations have received their new mandate letters with direction to take decisive action to increase Alberta’s sovereignty within a united Canada.

Minister of Education and Childcare Demetrios Nicolaides, Minister of Advanced Education Myles McDougall, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Infrastructure Martin Long, and Minister of Municipal Affairs Dan Williams have received their new mandate letters focused on high-quality education, community infrastructure, and municipal governance.

Of particular interest to the business community would be what the Premier has tasked Minister Dan Williams with, including:

  • Strengthening municipal relationships by building trust with local leaders, bringing their feedback to cabinet and working collaboratively to resolve conflicts between provincial and municipal policies.
  • Streamlining permitting and development by benchmarking approval timelines, implementing an ‘Automatic Yes’ permitting program and reducing barriers to speed up housing and business development.
  • Supporting strong and accountable municipalities by reviewing governance, compensation and codes of conduct to ensure elected officials can fulfill their duties, taxpayer dollars are respected and municipal governments remain viable and effective.
  • Protecting affordability for Albertans by exploring ways to limit excessive property tax increases, developing a strategy against specialized home taxes and supporting urban development that reflects Alberta’s values and keeps home ownership within reach.
Good Driver Rate Cap Extended

Albertans will continue to benefit from the good driver rate cap in 2026, as the Provincial Government advances a new care-first auto insurance system set for 2027. Drivers in Alberta with a good driving record will continue to benefit from a 7.5 per cent rate cap when their policies come up for renewal in 2025 and through 2026. With the rate cap, good drivers will spend less on insurance and more on the things that matter most – like their families, groceries and paying their rent. Find out more

Important changes to how tax preparers obtain access to an individual's account

The CRA has improved how representatives obtain access to individual clients' accounts.

In February 2025, the CRA enhanced the Alternative Authorization Request service in Represent a Client, making it faster. Representatives can now gain instant access to individual clients' accounts using information from a notice of assessment that is at least six months old.

Note: As of July 15, 2025, the Authorize a Representative service in EFILE software is no longer available for individual clients. Representatives must now use Represent a Client to obtain access.

This change does not affect authorization requests submitted through EFILE for business clients.

Check out our step-by-step guides:

Medicine Hat’s Evolving Patio Experience

Medicine Hat's growing patio culture is reshaping how residents and visitors experience the city. From cozy coffee shop terraces to lively boardwalk-style patios at local eateries, our community is a hub of outdoor social activity, thanks to a combination of community enthusiasm and municipal support.

Establishments downtown like LOCAL Public Eatery and Hometown Culinary have used their patios to host events, and live entertainment, and businesses outside the downtown core have also utilized the patio experience to maximize our enjoyment of the great weather Medicine Hat has to offer. Establishments, such as Moxies, MT Nest, R Kitchen, Blowers and Grafton, the Silver Buckle, Earl’s, Rossco’s, Browns Socialhouse, the Keg, Medicine Hat Brew Co and Ralph’s have all recognized the need to expand on their indoor offering and extending their spaces to the great outdoors, contributing to a dynamic street-level atmosphere and inviting spaces to enjoy the outside, enhancing the customer experience and supporting business growth.

This collective effort has led to a noticeable shift in the energy for customers in particular, with more people walking, dining, and socializing outdoors.

Through consultation and engagement with our Chamber, we were pleased to see the City of Medicine Hat introduce a new, simplified process for establishing outdoor patios and sidewalk cafés in 2025. The updated process was designed to be more accessible for both new and returning applicants with improvements through:

  1. Simplified Application and Renewal: Returning applicants benefit from a streamlined renewal process, one point of contact and reduced administrative burden.
  2. No Fees: In a move to further encourage patio development, the City announced that there will be no cost for patio applications, saving businesses over $600/year. The removal of associated fees has made patios and sidewalk cafes more affordable for businesses to implement.
  3. Enhanced Support: The City continues to offer guidance and incentives to help businesses create and maintain outdoor spaces that contribute to downtown vibrancy.

This process aims to balance public safety and accessibility with the desire to foster a lively and welcoming downtown environment.

Medicine Hat’s patio initiative demonstrates an example of responsiveness to community needs, the implementation of simple steps that encourage economic development, and streamlined efforts that help modernize our urban environment. By removing financial barriers and simplifying procedures such as these, the City has shown its willingness to work with local businesses to create memorable outdoor experiences that attract residents and tourists alike. We are pleased to hear that the City will continue the no cost and simplified application process for 2026, along with reviewing the renewal process for next the next summer season to have an even more simplified process for renewals in 2026. Public hearing to rezone proposed shelter site cancelled

On August 28, the City announced that after evaluating several properties, The Mustard Seed and the City of Medicine Hat had agreed to explore 2055 Saamis Drive NW as a potential location for emergency shelter services.

Since that time, both the City and The Mustard Seed have received numerous inquiries and concerns related to the appropriateness of this site, both for users and for surrounding properties and businesses. To allow both parties time to further review and respond to concerns, The Mustard Seed has withdrawn the application to rezone the property. As such, the public hearing scheduled for the September 29, 2025 City Council meeting is cancelled.

During the review process, the parties – including the Province of Alberta – will also take the opportunity to continue exploring other options for a permanent shelter location. As finding a shelter location that balances the needs and desires of all stakeholders is challenging, the parties are open to suggestions from community members on where to locate this important community service. Community members that have a suggestion for a suitable site can visit the City’s shelter services information page at https://www.medicinehat.ca/community-support-culture-safety/community-support/community-shelters/ and use the form to submit their thoughts.

While the need to find a location remains a priority, it’s important to take the time to hear from the community to ensure the best possible solution. The City appreciates the Mustard Seed’s decision to withdraw the application to allow time to review and respond to concerns, and to continue working together to determine a suitable location.

With the winter months nearing, the City of Medicine Hat will work closely with The Mustard Seed and Medicine Hat Community Housing Society to ensure interim plans are in place to support those in need during the cold weather months. The City appreciates the community’s patience while efforts continue to address this complex issue. Read this article on their website.
