New labour market information portal
Alberta’s government has launched a new Labour Market Information (LMI) portal, offering insights on in-demand jobs, industry trends, and essential skills. The platform is designed to support students, jobseekers, workers, employers, and policymakers in understanding workforce needs and emerging opportunities.
New Set of Mandate Letters
Alberta’s Minister of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration Joseph Schow, Minister of Forestry and Parks Todd Loewen, Minister of Tourism and Sport Andrew Boitchenko and Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women Tanya Fir have been tasked with promoting Alberta’s industries, driving investment, creating jobs and increasing prosperity for people who live in Alberta. The new mandate letters are focused on delivering the programs and supports that matter to Albertans, Alberta companies, workers and the economy, while maintaining Alberta as the best place to live, work and raise a family. WorkFirst Alberta Launches A New Suite of Employment Services
WorkFirst Alberta will make it easier for Albertans to access workshops, reskilling opportunities and career supports, while giving employers the tools they need to find and retain talent. Through WorkFirst Alberta, employers will be able to connect with local supports and access an employer toolkit and labour market information. In 2026, the program will expand further with the launch of a jobseeker-employer matching service and a concierge service tailored to employers.
A key aspect of WorkFirst Alberta is ensuring Albertans facing barriers to employment receive the customized supports they need. It expands supports for persons with disabilities, women, youth and other Albertans facing barriers through flexible, person-centred services focussed on long-term success.
These services include career planning, assistive technology and supported job placements. In addition, WorkFirst Alberta will improve access to wraparound supports including childcare, transportation and mental health supports.
Employers can enroll at WorkFirst.Alberta.ca now to get regular updates and take part in new initiatives. View the announcement online
New agency to build affordable homes
Canada’s government has launched Build Canada Homes, a new federal agency dedicated to tackling the housing crisis by building affordable, supportive, and transitional housing at scale. Backed by an initial $13 billion investment, the agency will leverage federal lands, modern construction methods, and public-private partnerships to double housing construction, protect rental units, and expand options for low- and middle-income Canadians. This initiative aligns with the Alberta Chambers of Commerce’s policy, A Pathway to Fixing Housing Affordability Crisis in Alberta (2024) Learn more

Advocacy in Action

Chamber Of Commerce Board Of Directors Begins New Fiscal Year With Strategic Decisions And Leadership Transition
The Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has officially commenced its new fiscal year with a series of impactful decisions aimed at strengthening governance, advancing policy priorities, and supporting regional development.
At its September 17, 2025, meeting, the Board of Directors accepted the resignation of Steven Pudwell from his role as President and Director, in accordance with the policies of the organization, following his expression of interest to pursue municipal politics. The Board expressed its appreciation for Mr. Pudwell’s service and leadership during his tenure.
The Board appointed Aaron Fleming as the new President of the Board of Directors to fill the vacancy. This unanimous decision by the Board follows Mr. Fleming's recent completion as Past Chair of the Alberta Chambers of Commerce.
Fleming brings a wealth of experience with close to 14 years within the Chamber network in Board leadership positions and holds a strong commitment to the Chamber’s mission of fostering economic growth and advocacy for Southeast Alberta businesses.
The Board also approved several key motions, including the adoption of three new policy positions:
- Development of 603 1st Street
- Unlocking the Potential of Underutilized Land in Medicine Hat
- Backflow Prevention Compliance and Support
The Chamber looks forward to its active agenda for the upcoming fiscal year and the municipal election forums taking place September 24, 26 and October 1 to determine where candidates sit on the priorities within this region.
The decisions made at the most recent meeting reflect the Chamber’s ongoing commitment to transparent governance, proactive policy leadership, and meaningful support for its members and the broader Southeast Alberta community.

Rezoning of 2055 Saamis Drive NW – Request for Comprehensive and Inclusive Planning
The Chamber has expressed our position regarding the proposed rezoning of 2055 Saamis Drive NW from Highway Commercial (C-H) to Direct Control (DC).
We recognize the importance of addressing the needs of vulnerable populations in our community and commend efforts to provide wraparound services. However, we urge the City to approach this decision with a comprehensive, sustainable plan that balances social responsibility with economic viability, safety, and long-term urban planning.

Key Considerations:
- Proximity to Industrial Operations
- Area Structure Plan (ASP) Relevance
- Economic and Community Impact
We support our members and businesses in calling on the City to work collaboratively toward a safe, accessible, and sustainable solution that truly serves all stakeholders. We urge Council to:
- Reassess the proposed rezoning in light of existing ASP and MDP policies.
- Ensure industrial proximity and business feedback are fully considered.
- Engage in broader consultation with affected businesses and community groups prior to decisions being finalized.
- Explore alternative locations that align with long-term planning and minimize conflict with industrial zones and better serve the intended needs for a long term viable solution.

Fill Up On Funding

Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI)
The RTRI will support businesses on the Prairies affected by recent trade actions to improve productivity, expand and diversify markets, strengthen supply chains, and boost domestic trade within Canada. Not-for-profit organizations that support businesses to manage the impact of trade disruptions are also eligible for funding. The RTRI is part of a broad set of tariff support measures, including the Large Enterprise Tariff Loan Facility, the Business Development Bank of Canada’s Pivot to Grow initiative, and enhancements to the Strategic Innovation Fund. Together, these measures are reinforcing Canada’s industrial strength and defending jobs across the country.
Further details on RTRI — including how to apply and eligible organizations — and additional support for Prairie businesses will be announced in the coming days. These measures will help companies navigate global trade disruptions, expand into new markets, and contribute to building a stronger, more self-reliant Canadian economy that works for everyone. Three new scholarships available
Alberta’s government is offering three post-secondary scholarships: the Persons Case Scholarship; the Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Scholarship; and the Women in Technical and Applied Arts Scholarship. Applications for the three scholarships are now officially open and will be accepted until Oct. 31, 2025. Find out more.

Update to the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) System to Drive Investment
Alberta’s government will introduce updates to the TIER system that would empower Alberta industries to invest in on-site emissions reduction technology that works for their specific businesses. Making Alberta’s highly successful TIER system even more effective and flexible will make industries more globally competitive while maintaining Alberta’s leadership in emissions reductions. Proposed updates to the TIER system include:
- Recognizing on-site emissions reduction investments as a new way for industry to comply with the TIER system in addition to the current options available, which include paying into the TIER fund or buying credits. This would reward companies for investing directly in emissions reduction technology that encourages innovation, supports local jobs and reduces emissions.
- Allowing smaller facilities that currently participate in the TIER system to leave or opt out for 2025 to reduce costs and red tape. Smaller facilities below the regulatory emissions threshold can face disproportionate compliance costs under the TIER system, which is mainly designed for large facilities. This change would help smaller industries save money and redirect resources into emissions reduction investments or other operational improvements for more cost savings. It offers flexibility, especially for small manufacturers and rural operations, which protects jobs across Alberta
